May be time to butcher the unicorn

Postby Freedomtodiscover » Wed Jan 07, 2015 8:18 pm

My AMEX Zync account is still open. This was my first AMEX until I got the BCE card and now really have no use for it. I don't think it is worth the $25 annual fee to keep just for the looks, especially since it's useless for rewards. Sunset or keep it?

I think you answered your own question.

I also have one. Got it before I got the Gold card. Having 2 chargers does earn MR points; the former MRE points on the Zync are now MR points. The $25 AF, for me, is a small price to pay for nostalgia. And I keep hoping that AMEX will acknowledge the cult following for this card and bring it back with some actual beefy benefits.

In the UK there is a no annual fee AmEx charge card. It's blue, no centurion dude on the front, and the card has zero rewards. To me, it's basically a safer alternative to a debit card. It has all the perks and benefits as all other AmEx cards do. I think AmEx should bring back the Zync; nerf the rewards and nerf the annual fee. It would make a great card for someone who wants the "security" of AmEx but wants the discipline of PIF but doesn't want to pay an annual fee. People like us wouldn't be interested in it, but I could see it having some interest in a small-spend group of people.

It's not really something to answer via polling others since worth is always highly subjective. Your first sentence that I quoted seems to contain your answer.

$25 is a small price for nostalgia, but it also is one more account to monitor. I would prefer simplicity and close it.

Keep the card in your wallet if you want nostalgia. You can display it prominently if you want other people to comment on it.

Be aware, though, that if another credit card geek sees it, you might not get the reaction you expect. If two people recognize the rare Zync, one might be fascinated and impressed, but the other might think you're an image-obsessed idiot for having a card with an annual fee and bad rewards.

The only comments I get when I take an Amex out of my wallet are "we don't take Amex" or "the Amex fees are ridiculous" followed by some merchant grumbling. Any people I'm with only care that I can pay my bill.

I don't think you'll be missing much by closing it. My Green card remains in my drawer even though I closed it. It's one of the cards I never cut up and threw away.

Just to put it out there as a potential option:

Have you ever thought of doing a Product Change for it if there are any other AMEX products that you like and you want to maintain the account and its status itself (oldest AMEX account and how it might contribute to your credit report) as opposed to the card only?

A Product Change is not a guaranteed thing, but it may be possible.

I got the basic Blue as one of my very first credit cards way back when and being that it had nothing of extra value attached to it (well, okay, it does; it has my lowest APR), I stopped using it altogether save for a random charge here and there to keep it active. I eventually PCed it to something else to see if I could get better worth from it as closing the account was ultimately a not so hot idea.

I agree. Why pay for something you don't use and you've grown out of?

If you like it for nostalgia reasons then put it in a safe place because 20 years down the road it may be neat to say, "Oh, I remember the Zync Card!"

My thoughts exactly.

Or perhaps AMEX could add these a la carte MR point earnings to the existing Green, Gold, and Platinum charge cards.

If they were to introduce a 'beefed up' Zync, what would those benefits be? PRG, Plat, or Cent can make sense for the right spender, but Green and Gold have already had the benefits stripped down quite a bit.

I have a hard time believing Amex would put good benefits on a sub-Green charge card. If they did, they might see an exodus of people leaving the higher-margin Green and Gold card accounts.

On the other hand, a Zync with highly customizable benefits might bring back old customers who had closed their Green and Gold card accounts.
