"platinum"

Postby MB131174 » Wed Jan 07, 2015 6:36 pm

Just curious - does anyone else think the Platinum card would look classier if they didn't put the word "platinum" on it? I think it's well known enough people would know what it is. I mean, the Green doesn't say "green" and the Gold doesn't say "gold". Just my opinion.

Good point! Maybe they put it on to differentiate the (similar) look of the Zync -- which also doesn't say "Zync" on it. Or maybe AMEX really IS pretentious about the Platinum card.

Maybe too many coworkers/dates/merchants would otherwise think it was a 'Silver' Amex - a card for people who aren't quite special enough for the iconic Gold.

To be clear, there is no such card as a Silver Amex (as far as I know). But most people aren't so well-informed about cards.

I think they should take the "platinum" off and make the card out of metal, but that would probably take away some of the appeal of the centurion card.

That's what I used to get when I had a Platinum Card 20+ years back. Most people didn't notice it and just ran the card. When someone did, I don't think I ever got a, "Oh... A PLATINUM Card.. Nice!," but I did get quite a few, "Oh.. a silver card.. One day you'll get the gold!"

Wouldn't matter either way to me.

Though the PRG does say "Premier Rewards".

True Dat!

The times I've used my Zync/Unicorn, I've frequently gotten comments: "Oooooh....a white AMEX! It must be really hard to get", to which I reply "It's more rare than the AMEX Black card!" May or may not be true, but it's hard to get a Black card; impossible (any more) to get a White card!

Interesting point of view I think the card would look pretty naked, but if they made it out of metal that would be a different story.
