What are some of the most rare (remote, uncommon) countries where you have used Amex?

Postby luisdaa » Tue Dec 16, 2014 11:08 pm

I have been to 10 countries: Canada, USA, Mexico, Costa Rica, Argentina, Uruguay, Spain, Andorra, France, and the UK.

I have been able to use my Platinum Amex card in all of them with the exception of Andorra. I went to Andorra in 2012. At that time only a couple of hotels accepted Amex. I think a few ATM's also accepted it. However, other than that, no other businesses accepted it. Not even McDonalds.

What are some of the most rare countries where you have used your Amex card? I'm also interested to know if which countries you have used it.

I have never used AMEX outside USA due to the foreign transaction fee.

I have used Visa / Mastercard in Australia, Canada, Fiji, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom.

Kazakhstan. Not rare or that remote, but uncommon for me, at least.

I am currently in Bulgaria (in the capital) and AMEX is almost non-existant here. Maybe at airport car rental and hotels they may accept it. We have an overall cash economy. We do have the Gold, Green and a credit card from AMEX directly though:

The local rewards program is also rather limited:

A funny part is several places here accept Diners International, which means Discover. However, I did call my DiscoverIT support and they told me my card doesn't support all Diners transactions, just some.
