Approved for Gold Rewards, Receive Mail Offer Four Days Later

Postby Mirari554 » Mon Dec 01, 2014 11:05 pm

Hi,

Last week I applied for and was approved for the Premier Rewards Gold card with the standard welcome bonus of 25,000 points for spending $2,000 in the first three months. Of course today I received a mail offer from amex inviting me to apply for the same card advertising a welcome bonus of 50,000 points for spending $1,0000 in the first three months.

Is there any way to take advantage of the mail offer welcome bonus? What would be the repercussions of going through the application process again using the rsvp code from the mail offer?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Call and ask if they'll grant you the offer.

Same as applying for any other card: you take a hit from the HP and the hit to AAoA (unless your MSD is sufficient to mitigate the latter). However, I'm not sure you can have multiple PRG's.

I would doubt if you can get approved if you apply through the mailed offer now. They can deny you with the reason of you having the product, and/or have a recent application or whatever. But it might turn out they approve you, so calling and asking them should get you the answer.

If you want anyway to get the bonus from the mail, look at some discussions in FlyerTalk (1,2). It looks like many people used to successfully match offers, but now it has been pretty difficult. Can't say it's impossible now if you find the right approach, but it can really be a hard one.

I would definitely call and talk to someone at Amex ASAP. I would not go through a second computer application.

Yours odds of getting the 50k MR points right now are not very good, but they are better if you call than if you go through their website and apply again.
Keeping indefinitely: IHG, SchwabPlat, CSP, Discover, Freedom, ED, BCE, Hyatt
May close or PC: Prestige, Arrival, BrooksBros
AA Platinum converting into Costco

Might add: Proper business card, CSR, Ritz, Delta Gold, First Tech
Letting new accounts cool off since May

This happened to me once on a Gold Business card from AMEX. I applied with a 50k standard offer then the next day I received a mail offer for 75k. I called and said they wouldn't give me the new offer, they did say that I could apply with the new offer if I wanted and that it was possible to have two of the exact same cards. These were for business accounts so it may be different. I didn't end up applying again.
