New USBank Flexperks Amex

Postby Laxsnor » Sun Nov 23, 2014 10:55 pm

Saw this while on the US Bank site. This appears to be new, and I believe USBank's first card on the Amex network: https://www.usbank.com/credit-cards/flexperks-travel-rewards-american-express-card.html.

$49 annual fee (waived first year)

Interesting rewards structure:
  • Up to One FlexPoint for every $1 spent in Net Purchases (up to $120,000 each year)
  • Double FlexPoints on airlines, gas or groceries - whichever you spend most on each monthly billing cycle (no limit)
  • Plus, Double FlexPoints on restaurants with your U.S. Bank FlexPerks Travel Rewards American Express Card. (no limit)
  • Double FlexPoints on most cell phone expenses (does this include cell phone bills?) (no limit)
  • Triple FlexPoints on qualifying charitable donations. (no limit)

I'm not that familiar with the FlexPoints redemption structure, but this seems promising? Only 20,000 FlexPoints = up to a $400 ticket.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but this doesn't seem like too bad of a card.
USBank Cash+ $12,000
Delta Amex $4,000
Sallie Mae $1,000

I don't know anything about US Bank because I would never be able to qualify at this point, but what is "up to one FlexPoint"? They offer less than a point on some purchases? I've never seen that, if that's not a typo. I don't feel like dealing with fractions of a point...

This is described in their footnote for general purchases (non-bonus categories).
Yearly Award Level: For Net Purchases less than or equal to $120,000, earn one FlexPoint for every $1. If during the calendar year, Net Purchases exceed $120,000, all FlexPoints for the remainder of the calendar year are earned at a rate of one FlexPoint for every $2.

Oh ok, so if I break $120K, then and only then do the points become .5/$1.

No big deal then. If I was spending that kind of money, it wouldn't be on this card anyways.

There's no right or wrong. It's a subjective matter. The cards starts off as "meh" for me and just goes downhill with the US Bank association given their recent track record. YMMV of course.

I brought this up a few weeks ago.

I also said it sounds very similar to Wells Fargo's Propel Amex card.

I think US Bank is another one of those kinds of banks where if you already have a relationship with them that it's easier to get approved for stuff from them.

Sorry, I didn't see your earlier thread.

Yes, this is definitely the case. I have a checking account with them along with my Cash+ and they have been doing targeted offers to preexisting customers - they even have branches calling current customers!

Getting a $399 ticket for 20,000 points may sound good, but in practice you'll sometimes use 30,000 points for a $401 ticket. That would stink. If you redeem for airfare, you have to redeem in unusual increments. You cannot, for example, get a $222 ticket for 11,100 points. It would cost the same number of points as a $399 ticket.

If you want one general-purpose card, the rewards aren't bad, but I wouldn't pay an annual fee for it.
