How hard would it really be for Amex to just come up with a list of their merchants who process less than $X of Amex card payments - over Amex's very own payment network - in a year for a given set of zip codes near my billing address?

Was there some meeting where Amex execs agreed, "Hey, we have all this accurate information about small businesses who take our card. But rather than sort through it ourselves, let's hire some outsiders who have unreliable information and can really complicate things!"?

This is why I didn't use the promotion at all.* I tried to use the map and it said there was nothing in my area that qualified save for one address that just looked like a personal residence as near as I could tell. I thought there just wasn't anyone participating in my remote area, but it sounds like the problem was much bigger than me. No loss for me, though - I am better off not spending the money anyway, and I certainly wouldn't go somewhere and spend over $10 just in case I get $10 back later on.

*Also I spent the Saturday at my grandmother-in-law's with family, so I might not have had the opportunity anyway...even if I hadn't already written it off in my head.

I read this and it's a bummer this guy had such a rough time, but he lives in L.A. I live in a smaller Texas city, and spending 30 minutes to get $90 worth of free stuff was totally worth it to me. I didn't hold up any lines. I bought extra stuff that I normally buy anyway. I go to the same three or four places that I know participate so I know I'll get my credit. My wife and I had nothing better to do that day anyway, so we went to dinner and paid separately. Also, I did not have near the troubles with the map. I did see a few places on the list that I know from memory don't accept AmEx, since as the years go buy, I tend to remember if AmEx is accepted or not in places I do business. Seeing as I'm from a smaller town, most people are pretty interested in promoting local business, my wife and I eat at local restaurants 100% of the time, sans the occasional fast food, but anyway, my point is that it is worth my time to give AmEx's money to my local merchants to support them. Every little bit helps, and it sounds like it's a lot less trouble for me to make several stops than it is the author, so it seems this article was very particular to him.

That would be very handy! Is that in any way affiliated with the Amex program? It could also be interpreted as a generic "support your local economy by giving your money to local business owners" political message.

Maybe it is for the Amex program and I just wasn't aware of it before (or the Amex logo is out of frame). Either way, something like that would be good for Amex to give out to merchants - kind of like the decals they put on windows to let you know your card's accepted or those little pleather black books restaurants bring you your check in that subtly advertise an issuer. From a local business owners' perspective, it could bring in customers for the credits and they wouldn't even be out anything.

Yeah it did have the amex logo- just couldn't find a clear example. I do know of a place that still has the poster on its window- I can take a picture the next time I go.. I usually go once a week so I'll do that.

I received my credit finally, I was worried because I registered but never received an email when I actually used the offer. Good to know I still received my credit.
