Got my $30 worth. Could have done $60 since I have two different cards but there really wasn't a ton of places around town that I wanted much from. My favorite bar was listed so effectively got a $6 lunch and beer. Liquor store, and a dozen bagels. Hell of a deal. Gotta love AMEX.

$30 so far. I have another $30 available, but it's getting late.

Received an email after each transaction.

I also got an email after each one. Good to know I read the website correctly and my purchases actually qualified

Kudo's to American Express for sending the confirmation emails. AmEx, if you are reading this, thank you for that courteous gesture of reassurance that you logged our effort to participate in the Small Business Saturday program. There is no indication at the retailer level whatsoever. In fact, in the mapped store that I went to today, the clerks had never heard of SBS. I just proceeded with my transactions, purposely paying for items individually to meet the guidelines, and voila, I too, received 3 emails.

I will say that were it not for this store being on the SBS list, I would never in my life have even heard of them, let alone darkened their doorway, so I guess from the store's perspective, the program works. Even when the items purchased were already on sale, and less than $15 per transaction (to realize the maximum savings)... the small business gains some traffic and attention that it would otherwise have to pay advertising to attract, which never got me to go there in the past. But AmEx's kick back did.
Current Cards:
AmEx Platinum Charge: NPSL, $450 AF
AmEx Reserve Credit: $30K limit, $450 AF
Chase Slate Visa Credit: $32K limit, No AF
Future Strategy:
Near Term: Need a good MasterCard for places that won't accept AmEx or Visa
Long Term: Will downsize out of one or both current AmEx cards to reduce AFs

I took my daughter to the movies and used my BCP twice, first to pay for the tickets and then for the popcorn and sodas. I was surprised when I got not 2 but 3 emails telling me I had just made a qualifying purchase.

I did encounter one store that was on the list but did not accept Amex. Not sure how that happened.

The list is provided by third party and thus may contain inaccuracies, according to their terms.

One grocer around me that never accepts Amex gets listed on that map. I would assume it's their so-called third party who results in this.

I also went to a restaurant today that I have used Amex card before (around this February), but today I see the Amex logo in the restaurant has been covered by a piece of paper. They replaced their terminal this summer and I would assume they have switched acquirer.

I heard it can be a real hassle for the small business owners to register for it.

I'm still wondering how on earth Sheetz qualified as a small business, if anyone has any insight.

This might be the reason why there are merchants not accepting Amex cards get listed.
Image

Businesses can promote themselves through this portal, even if they don't take Amex. It's a marketing program for the businesses, not for them to accept Amex cards.

The application is incredibly simple, just fill in the business name, location, email and website, choose if the business wants to be listed on ShopSmall, and submit the application for approval. There doesn't seem to be hard work or hassle there.

Full terms here. Eligibility does not include accepting Amex.

By the business scale, Sheetz should never qualify. They never show up on the ShopSmall map.
