Trying to get my 1st Amex card. Advice

Postby p51 » Sat Nov 15, 2014 11:22 pm

Hello all,

I have spent the last few years trying to repair my credit after financial mismanagement over 15 years ago and a car repossession 7 years ago this month. I have been using a secured Capital One card since May 2012 no other credit cards. Started with the requisite $200.00 balance. I added an additional $1200.00 to bump it up. Have never made a late payment, although I have been very close to my credit limit a few times when i was laid off. I just paid off my cc and auto loan. Current balance for both is $0. The repo will be 7 years this month. No loan or credit apps this year (just inq from starting a new bank account). How do my chances sound for an AMEX card. Thanks in advance
Capital One secured opened May 2012 -- $1401 ($1200 of my own money to increase limit) I will be closing this as soon as I qualify for an AMEX Simply Cash business card (hopefully this summer).
Amex PRG opened Nov 2014 -- No preset spending limit
Chase Freedom Nov 2014 -- $4000
Bank of America Cash Rewards Nov 2014 -- $2500

I would say you are on the right track, however I would wait to make sure the REPO is off all three credit reporting agencies first before you apply. I would say if your scores or up over 725 you would have a good chance.

You can get an Amex prepaid card. You can get the American Express Serve Card. Even though it's a prepaid card, it still comes with a lot of benefits.

My Experian was maybe 690 or better. Experian was in the 690 range. TransUnion was in the early 700's

Is the Delta Skymiles a charge or a credit card?

Thanks for the info. I probably won't be applying for any new cards until the spring (at the earliest)
