Question for Travis from Amex

Postby TheLethargicAge » Mon Nov 10, 2014 12:18 pm

When the TrueEarnings card gets discontinued, is Amex keeping the accounts and converting them to another product? Or are they getting transferred to Costco's new partner?
Blue Cash Preferred ($24K), Costco TrueEarnings ($8K), Better Balance Rewards ($6K), CashForward ($15K), Sallie Mae Rewards ($10K), Quicksilver ($17K), AARP Rewards ($15K), Freedom ($15K), Double Cash ($16.5K), It ($28.5K), Fidelity Investment Rewards ($18K), Cash+ ($11K)

Since amex hasn't lost the contract yet, it's premature to think that they know what they'd do if it were to happen. the contract makes amex a lot of money, and they might be willing to give costco a better deal.

I'm assuming this is a rumor, if this were to happen what is the timetable for this? I haven't heard anything about it.

The switch from AmEx to Capital One and MasterCard is a given in Canada and occurs as of the first of 2015. Costco has said it is evaluating the same move in the U.S. but I haven't seen anything definite on it actually occurring.

I would presume that Costco has a list of members that have the Costco Amex card and may turn that over to Capital One (assuming that was the new partner) who, in turn, would probably send offers to apply for the new [branded partner] Costco credit card. Of course, there would be the ubiquitous greeter at the table just inside the door with boxes of paper apps to hand out as you come through the door.

I would think Amex would, in turn, notify the customer that their existing Costco card would be converted to one of their other products, if not just nerf the Costco-related benefits.
AmEx - Platinum (NPSL) , Blue Cash Preferred ($19,000), Gold Delta Skymiles ($8,500)
Chase - Sapphire Preferred ($14,000), Disney ($11,500), Amazon.com ($9,000), Freedom ($8,000)
CapOne - QuickSilver ($7,250) / Platinum Rewards ($7,250)

Sorry to have left you hanging, LethargicAge - I'm still around! We simply have no information regarding the Costco and American Express partnership at this time. I'm also not on the social media team, and so in order to avoid inadvertently stepping on anyone's toes, I will only reach out if I can see that a cardmember has an ongoing issue that they've attempted to resolve multiple times so I can get them in touch with the right people or if they aren't really sure where to go for the right help.

The best people to ask general questions to are customer service via the number on the back of your card, or you can tweet @askamex. Hope you're all having a nice day!
