AMEX polices re: asking for a recon on denied app

Postby cashinout » Mon Oct 06, 2014 2:17 pm

So here is the deal I just bought a Mercedes CLA-250 AMG and I saw at the dealer that there was a Mercedes Amex. I figured hmm why not get this the points and crap goes towards your next purchase with them and some other bonus stuff. So amex denied my application i called asap and asked why as i have 3 cards with them and have never had any issues. The person told me they didn't have a reason so I asked for someone else to look it up. The person came back with you were denied due to 1 late payment reporting on your credit report. I asked what was this and it was a auto loan 6 years ago and it was late 15 days not even 30. I asked how is it I am denied for something 6 years ago and yet have 3 card you all. Then the rep said yeah that doesn't make sense so the rep went back and said oh you just had recent credit inquiries, i responded yes this was because Mercedes USA ran my credit on the 23 of Sept and again on the 2nd of Oct but that shouldn't count against me the person was like yes it does. I then said i cannot accept this as a reason for not approving someone so even said i could cxl my blue cash and go of this one the rep was like that is not necessary. then went back to the 6yr old late payment of 15 days to wellsfargo dealer services right i kept calm was not rude or anything i asked to have it reconsidered the guy was like you can fax in your experian credit report and put attn to something media so said okay. I am not going to do that so i wanted to know why can't they pull it themselves i called back got another person the dude was like looking at what we have we based this off of a credit report from June which was the last time we pulled your credit, i was tripped out you mean to tell me your denying apps using old credit reports and not knew ones so i asked about how the guy new about the M-Benz credit inquire he said i offered that up and I did because he just used a generic rejection of to many credit inquiry. So call my self explaining what it was and why there were two pulls. I swear just say you don't want to give folks the card but using reports that are 3 months old from june to deny a app in Oct are you for real i had no idea banks did this. Sorry for the long rant i just have never seen this before but its all good i guess it wasn't meant for me to carry that card...

Yeah,. strange, I would just take it as them saying without saying that they are not comfortable extending you more credit at this time.

I agree and that is what I ended up taking it as just thought it was nuts how they use these generic reasons to deny something...

By law they have to give you the reasons for the decline. Typically they list them in the order of severity from worst issue to least serious in their view. So they have to do that to fulfill the letter of the law. It would take a really straight shooting CSR to come right out and say that your internal score with us just isn't at a level we want to give you another card right now - give it 6 months to a year and try again.

It does sound like an internal score issue. I'd be surprised if any lender would consider giving a big, new credit line based on a pull from three months ago. At least, Amex did two separate pulls for my cards, three months apart.

If they didn't do a pull, then it sounds like the answer was already 'no'.

You must have a lot of inquiries, though, with several cards from 2013.

Would a PC from regular Platinum to MB Plat be possible? Or would you lose some regular Platinum perks?
Very useful: SchwabPlat, CSP, IHG, Costco (was AA Plat), Freedom, SPG, Prestige (retention)
Somewhat useful: Discover, ED (was EDP), BCE, Hyatt
SD with activity alerts, might close: Arrival

Might add: Proper business card, CSR, Ritz, Delta Gold, First Tech, BofA Travel PH, Aviator Red

You are right they must be including all my accounts that were new in 2013 so how long do inquiries stay I notice some drop off after a while.

Inquiries stay on your report for two years. I can't say whether their policy is to consider all inquiries on your report (as opposed to those, for example, that are under a year or something).
