AMEX Account#?

Postby sicasun » Thu Oct 02, 2014 10:07 am

[strike]I just got a notice from my credit monitoring service that a new account under AMEX was opening. I do have a new AMEX card, the Costco True Earnings. The problem is that I don't recognize the account# that the credit monitor listed.

All my other card accounts list numbers that are part of the 16 digit card number, but the 4 digits I see of the account# for the AMEX isn't on my card or my account online anywhere.

Does anyone know if AMEX just has a different account# from card#, or is your card# supposed to be your account number....?[/strike]

Actually disregard this. I will call AMEX to be sure, but my statement balances match, so should be okay. Whoops, silly me.

Well, no - let's not disregard this, because it illuminates one of Amex's interesting security practices.

When Amex reports your account to a CRA, they generate an account number specifically for reporting purposes. It's a different number, in a completely different format, than the account number on your card that you use for purchases. While it may seem strange, it prevents someone from obtaining your account number from a credit report.

Just pull out any statement and look at the bottom of first page (where the so called payment coupon is), you will find that number.

And as djrez4 already has said, that number is primarily for reporting and security purposes.
