This is just another example of an Amex push to get more members to use the more lucrative revolvers they offer. Soon, the only perk of holding a Platinum or PRG/Gold card will be (perceived) prestige. They have effectively eliminated the one card solution they used to push. Now to maximize your point/mile/CB you need two or three cards.

Per Amex’s release: “We are eliminating this because the majority of Premier Rewards Gold Card Members did not meet the annual spending threshold of $30,000 and did not get the point bonus. Instead, we are evaluating other benefits and services that we believe may provide value to more of our Premier Rewards Gold Card Members.”

What Amex is really thinking: Damn! We didn't expect that many people to actually meet the 30k threshold... we just figured we'd have a bunch of people who ended up spending 28 or 29 thousand, but I guess people aren't as stupid as we think and make sure they get that 30k spend if they get close! Now we're over budget in that category. Let's randomly FR a bunch of people who made the spend(they're probably ms-ing anway) so we can get the rumor mill going on forums all over the internet! Oh, and let's create some useless benefit which sounds good, but which no one really needs or will use.
In my Wallet:
  • Amex PRG NPSL[3-14, bd 91]
  • Sallie Mae MC $8000[1-14]
  • Chase Freedom $4700[1-14]
  • Discover It $2750[8-13]
  • BoA UCF Alumni Cash Rewards $5000 [3-15]
Sometimes in my Wallet:
  • GM BuyPower WEMC $5000[9-14]
  • Wells Fargo Propel 365 Amex $7000[4-14]
  • Barclaycard Arrival WEMC $7000[3-14]
  • BoA Better Balance $3000[2-15]
In my sockdrawer: Amex BCE $1000[10-13, bd 91], OCCU Duck $10000 [11-13], The Sportsman's Guide Visa $8000[8-14], Chase Slate $4000 [9-14]Delta Gold Amex $2000 [2-15 bd 91], Diners Club MC $20000 [10-14] Commerce Bank Visa $2000 [3-15] Citi Double Cash $1000 [3-15]
Total CL: $90450

Totally agree, otter. If they REALLY were reevaluating benefits for the sake of their cardholders, they would announce what they're adding at the same time to lessen the blow. Clearly they've done enough "evaluating" to know they can't afford to keep handing out all these sizeable bonuses.
