Amex's math

Postby MemberSince99 » Wed Sep 24, 2014 6:56 am

Ok so on my last statement on my Platinum on the 18th I had a 0 balance. I checked my balance today Amex says it's 370.66. That seemed a tad high so I summed the charges they have listed and it came to only 323.73.

How they hell do they get that total when the charges posted are less? How can the balance not equal the sum of the posted charges minus any payments/credits?

I hate having to watch them like a hawk but now the distrust is starting. I sent them a message let's see what they say.

Maybe there was a pending charge that's not showing up yet. That happened to me on my EveryDay card and I couldn't figure out why my available credit dipped a bit until that charge fully posted.

Yeah and they run the changes in the morning too so it might be in some intermediate state. It's always updated by 10 AM. Maybe that's the case.

...and not unique to AmEx at all. I've had the same sort of thing happen with pending charges with other creditors.

Amex, though, only seem to update things once a day, while everyone else I deal with does it in pretty much real time. That's pretty pathetic in 2014.
