Earning Add'l F/F Miles Thru Amex Travel

Postby luvbullmarkets » Sat Sep 13, 2014 1:34 pm

Hello Everyone,

What is everyone's experience using AMEX travel? Specifically using MR points to redeem for travel. I looked at round-trip airfare for two from SFO to Las Vegas for ~90K points through carrier United Airlines. Through the AMEX travel portal one could type in their frequent flyer program number and earn flight miles.

Normally I would just transfer the MR Points but unfortunately United is not a transfer partner with AMEX. Oddly enough I seem to have stumbled upon a loophole of being able to use MR points towards traveling on board United.

Will AMEX travel correctly deposit my "earned" miles into my United Plus account?

90k is a lot of points for a United flight from SFO to Vegas. While you should, theoretically, earn miles, you may have to log into the United website after booking to add your Mileage Pkus number to the reservation.

Discussion forums aren't guaranteed to generate responses. Travel booked through the portals is frequently not a very good deal and those looking to maximize value per point tend to rely on transferring points to partners.

You might want to check on a travel site as well.

I'm considering opening a KrisFlyer account, transfer MR points at a 1:1 ratio, then book thru KrisFlyer on United or any of their other partner airlines. Bottom line it will be a bit of a headache to utilize these MR points.
