Platinum Invitation

Postby kelvSYC » Sun Sep 07, 2014 9:04 pm

Here's something that's really weird. I received an email from American Express inviting me to "apply for the Platinum card". I recently pulled my credit eight times (for a car loan), so clearly my scores have taken a hit. (CK FAKOs have reported a score increase FWIW; I'm going to have to try to get a real score sooner or later...)

While the benefits and drawbacks are substantial (though I think I will pass), does this seem like an attempt to add yet another credit card pull to my record, lowering my scores to the point where I cannot reasonably expect to receive any new credit in the future?

(My original pull for my BCE card is still on my record, and it is through owning this card that American Express can contact me in the first place.)
Current Credit Scores:
VantageScore 3.0 - 760 TU, 764 EX (11-19-16, Credit Karma)
FICO 8 - 747 EX (10-22-16, AmEx statement)
Discover - 750 TU (11-4-16, Discover statement)

Current Credit Cards:
RBC - $8000 CAD
BoA - $13500 USD
Capital One - $2750 USD
AmEx BCE - $4000 USD
Discover It - $8000 USD

You think Amex is trying to get you to apply so your scores will be low enough that you can't get any more credit cards? Am I getting that right?

Amex doesn't care that much about you.

So they care enough to send me an email saying that they want me to apply, knowing that if I did, I wouldn't be approved, making me waste my time and costing me a precious hard pull.

You are right, American Express cares only enough to try and pull off this stunt.

They don't know you wouldn't be approved. While I have never gotten one for the Platinum card, those credit card invitations are just that: invitations to apply. There is no guarantee you will be approved if you do apply.

It is a marketing tool; they have a lot to gain from your opening a new account. The offer may not have been sent out to everyone on your street, but those targeted offers still aren't that selective. It is not like there is a team of analysts pouring over credit files to determine who qualifies for the offer. More likely, you made it through a set of filters in a database. Hell, long after I opened a Discover card I regularly got offers inviting me to apply for the same account.

(10/12) - Amex BCE
(02/13) - Chase Freedom VISA
(09/13) - Discover It
(03/14) - Sallie Mae WMC
(09/15) - Citi Double Cash WEMC
(09/16) - US Bank Cash+ VISA Signature
(01/17) - Amazon Prime Rewards Visa Signature

It's just marketing -- nothing weird about it. Card companies do this all the time. It's not unique to AmEx.
