Skymiles benefit question

Postby HotrodBill » Sun Sep 07, 2014 6:32 pm

I currently have the gold skymiles card, and have a Delta flight upcoming in a month for my wife and I. I understand that your first checked bag is free as a card holder. How does this transpire? Do you simply show them the card at check in or do you pay and they credit the card back?

Second how does the priority boarding work? Do they simply call delta card holders up and you show the card and board the flight early?

Thanks for the insight, Bill

If you paid for your tickets with the card then when you go to check in your first bag (and your wife's first bag), their system automatically marks them as free. Pretty simple.

Once your tickets are issued, you'll notice that regardless of where your seats are on the plane, you will be boarding with all the folks in section 1.

One other perk, if you buy food on the plane, you'll be charged full price but AmEx will fairly quickly put a refund of 20% of the price on your card.

I would say what Xorand explained is probably how it works. I haven't bought Delta tickets yet with mine, but with my United card I buy the tickets with the card and when I use the machine to check my bag it goes through without the fee. You also get priority boarding with both cards as it's printed on your boarding pass. I have also (more times than not) been granted TSA PRE check-in with the United card. Don't know if that's offered with the Skymiles card. The PRE "benefit" has always been random, but there has only been one time that I have not gotten it.

Does anyone know if you have to buy plane tickets with the card to receive these benefits, or is it for any flight in your Skymiles account? For example, award flights do I still get the same benefits of priority boarding and all that? I got the Gold Delta just this week so I haven't had experience with it yet.

I've only used my Skymiles card for one ticket so far and they put me on PRE, as well. Hmm. I didn't really pay much attention to the fact at the time. Will be flying again in December. Will advise at that time if I remember.

Not sure. It's pretty tightly tied with your Delta sky miles balance. Guess the best bet would be to flash your card at the check-in counter and see what you can accomplish. Report back if you think of it. Would be interesting to find out.

Don't have one myself but from looking at the AmEx site it seems like your SkyMiles account should be associated with your card (the application asks for your SkyMiles number). The terms (always a good place to start)
https://www304.americanexpress.com/personal-card-application/member/terms/delta-gold-credit-card/36182-11-0/#cardbenefits)
as well as Delt'a own site
http://www.delta.com/content/www/en_US/traveling-with-us/baggage/before-your-trip/checked/first-bag-free.html
indicate that your SkyMiles number must be included in the reservation to receive the benefit.

As indicated above, sounds pretty much like how the Chase United MileagePlus Explorer works (which I do have).

Same way as the free checked bag works -- via the association of your SkyMiles card account and SkyMiles account. Terms also mention that the reservation must include your SkyMiles number for the benefit.

If it's anything like the Chase MP card, you have to use the card to purchase your ticket to get the benefits and double miles.

I'll be flying four times this month, I'll report back and see if I get priority boarding even though I didn't purchase the flight with the card. Still waiting to actually receive the card, was approved last week so I hope the card comes soon as I fly to SJC on Saturday.

I seem to remember my cards arriving about a week after applying. I applied online while booking a flight on Delta so after approval it gave me a temporary card number to use to complete checking out on my flight. I received the card in time to use it on the subsequent flight which, as I remember, was only a couple weeks from booking.
