Would I have a chance at the Amex Platinum?

Postby Gb24 » Tue Sep 02, 2014 1:07 pm

Ive currently had my Amex green card since last november. Ive spent a hefty amount on there in the past months and obviously everything has been paid off each month.
I have a score of 649, due to some pass due bills a few years ago, all of which have sense been paid off.
Im 24, in school and graduate in next may.
I already have a full time offer.

I currently make around 40k a year.
I have other cards, my credit utilization is around 9%

I plan on applying for the Amex Platinum or Chase Sapphire Preferred at the end of the year.

Any thoughts?

I think you can call and just ask them if they will convert the Green into a Platinum. You were possibly a borderline candidate for getting a Green when you did, but the Platinum isn't much harder to get (if it's any harder at all). I don't think there's any need to have a Green as well as a Platinum, unless you want to have multiple accounts reporting for backdating.

Also, if you want a new account, you might open it in Jan 2015 to maximize the benefit of backdating.
Keeping indefinitely: IHG, SchwabPlat, CSP, Discover, Freedom, ED, BCE, Hyatt
May close or PC: Prestige, Arrival, BrooksBros
AA Platinum converting into Costco

Might add: Proper business card, CSR, Ritz, Delta Gold, First Tech
Letting new accounts cool off since May

I was just thinking about doing that. Will it be a soft pull or a hard pull?

I don't think they PC the anything to Platinum other than the PRG. Can't hurt to call and ask, though.
FICO TU - 728 - 8/14
FICO EX - 716 - 7/14
FICO EQ - 740 - 7/14

Bank of America Cash Rewards - $2,400
Best Buy - $3,000
American Express Blue Cash Everyday - $8,000
American Express Everyday - $10,000
Discover It Chrome - $500 (AU on fiancée's card, helping her build credit)
American Express Platinum - NPSL
Barclaycard Arrival+ - $3,000
Capital One Yamacard - $11,000

I suspect a Green to Platinum change is possible. It's just the AF and benefits that vary. It is possible to have a Platinum with a very low 'secret' limit behind the NPSL.

I called today. She said I have to wait until my first year is up to do a product upgrade. So that'll be the beginning of December.

Yep that's the policy. And as far as PCing goes, you can PC a Green to Platinum if it better suits you it's not just the PRG that can be PC'd this way.

You can pc 13 months after you opened the green card. I called to upgrade to gold and was told to wait. I asked if I could upgrade to platinum at that time and was told that was fine as well. Wait 13 months and get whatever you want
Amex Green
Amex Delta Sky Miles Gold
Chase Freedom
Barclay Arrival
Citi Diamond Preferred
BofA BankAmericard
Cap One Venture One

Yes, just one. Why do you want a Platinum card? I am not trying to be a jerk, just an honest question. With a $450 AF, will you be able to make it up? What benefits of it do you plan on using that makes the card worthwhile to you? If the only reason you would like it is the prestige, I'd skip it. :-)
