I plan to travel a bunch starting January through June of next year and plan to take more trips after graduation. That's my main reason behind it

I really think you'd be good with the gold rewards card. I have a somewhat similar income and score and I can't justify the platinum a/f right now. Gold is more costly then green enough that it'll be all I need till I finish my degree. Personally theres no need to spend money if you don't have to. The only way id get the platinum card is if I could take advantage of every single benefit to offset the a/f.
Amex Green
Amex Delta Sky Miles Gold
Chase Freedom
Barclay Arrival
Citi Diamond Preferred
BofA BankAmericard
Cap One Venture One

Agree with the others

unless the new job pays a ton more (or you travel at for your job), a card with a 450 af doesn't make a ton of sense on a 40k salary
- Amex Platinum
- Chase Sapphire Reserve
- Visa Fidelity

I have a score of 649, due to some pass due bills a few years ago, all of which have sense been paid off.
Im 24, in school and graduate in next may.
I already have a full time offer.

I currently make around 40k a year.
I have other cards, my credit utilization is around 9%

I plan on applying for the Amex Platinum or Chase Sapphire Preferred at the end of the year.

Any thoughts?

Yes, you would get approved. But why do you need the platinum card? Unless your work requires you to fly twice a week there are far better cards for rewards (search these forums). If it's prestige then forget it ... almost anyone who qualifies for AMEX qualifies for platinum. Only Centurion is the prestige card in AMEX line-up.

CSP being a visa is accepted everywhere and it gives rewards for dining along with travel. The fee is much lower as well.
