Noticed this morning my account was no longer suspended. I used it for lunch with no issues. I gave them what they asked for and even faxed a bank statement to them the day I found out about it. I think that helped to speed up the process. I plan to call in a few minutes to make sure but seems like I'm up and running again. No more gift cards for me unless its through cash.

Talked to Amex. 5 days of worry has turned into being able to charge a lot more than I could before. The spend power is now 8k which is more than enough but its nice to know I can get a big screen tv and some furniture if needed. May take the wife out to Mack dees courtesy of the gold card. We could get 8k Mack doubles

How did you get the $8k figure? Is that something they just told you at the end of the FR process? Or you played with the 'Check Spending Ability (aka FR me?) link since one was coming, anyway?

I got the rep to plug it in to see what I could spend. I started with 10 but declined, then tried 8 and it was approved. I've heard if you put in too high of a dollar amount it tells you to call.

Sounds like too much use of the button can temporarily break it.

I don't anticipate any major purchases coming up, so I've not tried it yet. Common sense says, for example, that with total spending of only about $2k on the card so far, they would probably turn down, say, a $25k car purchase.

Though if I was doing the FR anyway, I would ask out of curiousity.

Yeah its nice now knowing what a generally safe spend level is. Amex seems to consistently give the highest spend power after building a good history with them.

Why do they not like gift cards so much?

If a person buys a gift card using a credit card, and then uses the gift card for normal purchases, he or she can squeeze a lot more out of a rewards program than the issuer intends to offer. Officially, many credit cards can't be used to buy gift cards - at least the Amex agreement says you can't use it to buy prepaid cards. The thing is: not all stores that sell gift cards classify them separately from other products, so some people are able to do this without some computer system detecting it as an improper transaction - but more stores catch it now.

Odd...my first BCE swipe was a $29 grocery charge that went through smoothly...do you know why it was declined?
