Can you turn Platinum AmEx into a credit card?

Postby Dan-vA » Wed Aug 13, 2014 9:42 am

Hey guys. I've been reading on this website for a while now and all the information is great.

I have a question about Amex Charge cards that I can't seem to find any info on.

I heard a rumor that it is possible to turn a charge card (Plat for example) into a credit card. You wouldn't need to pay the balance in full but would have a credit limit. Is this true?

Appreciate the help!

Sort of. It's called pay-over-time.

+1. However, this is not necessarily available to all cardholders. Give them a call to find out if you qualify.

If we interpret the question literally, no there is not a way the only thing close would be pay over time as they mentioned, but it's still a charge it just lets you pay SOME charges over time. But it's still a charge card that part never changes. And as mentioned it's not available to all members your internal score has to allow it.

I don't advise doing that though to be honest. They offered me the feature and I declined it. I've read plenty of stories that back them liking and preferring pay in full behavior. That's what they seem to reward with CLIs anyway.

I agree, why not grab a plain ole credit card then if you aren't looking to PIF?

yes kind of but you ought to have an impeccable credit paying history, give them a jingle if not very sure.

Just to be clear, if you are referring to a product change from one type of card (charge) to another type of card (credit), then the answer is no, AMEX will not allow a product change between types of cards. One can do a product change within a card type, but there are limitations.

Nope. You cannot convert from a charge card to a credit card (and certainly not with a pending balance on your account).
