Should I Upgrade to the Platinum Card?

Postby brettbennett » Sat Aug 02, 2014 2:28 pm

I have the American Express Gold Card right now and was wanting to upgrade to the Platinum Card for the concierge and the benefits. I don't do any commercial flying, but I travel some. Sometimes, out of the country. I think I would get approved, just the annual fee is steep.

Totally up to you. If it suits your needs, go for it.

No - I would not "upgrade" it unless they gave you a great offer to upgrade.

If you are considering it, you should signup for a new card and get at least the 50k MR bonus points on signup. Depending on the upgrade offer, you may get 0 points to upgrade.

With the 50k bonus points to signup, global entry, and the 2 x $200 statement credits ($200 in 2014, and $200 in 2015 before you come up for renewal in August 2015) you can easily justify the first year fee.

It is the second year you need to consider if it is worth it to you or not. The first year is a no brainer.

Most upgrades do not include the bonus but sometimes there is a promo to upgrade. It would say in your account where it is offering you the chance to upgrade.

If you do not have a targeted Platinum offer already, the Mercedes Platinum comes with 50k points. There are targeted offers going around though offering 75, 100, or 150k points (usually on the business cards but some require spending $20k to get the points).

You can also cancel your Gold card before the fee comes up and Amex will pro-rate the fee and give you a refund. No need to wait until the the fee comes up if you do not need the card.

I did not know that, I just paid my A-fee on my last statement on 7/16.

One thing to be cautious of is that amex isn't being the most giving when it comes to bonuses for existing card members. Often an existing member will get 0 bonus points on a new card if they already have a card in the same family. Or so has been my experience.

All true on the bonuses. They don't seem to much like churners. It's always YMMV - they gave me sign up on the Hilton card where I was thinking they wouldn't. I haven't had that card before but it said "an Amex card" not that one specifically so it just depends how they choose to interpret that I guess.
