Approved for Amex Gold

Postby mikegyver » Fri Aug 01, 2014 2:04 pm

Been approved for Amex gold. Figured I would try it out a year to see how it goes before the annual fee starts up.

Is the gold card a decent product overall?

You should have used my darn referral to get points and you would have got a PRG!

Just joking, Amex Gold to me is not worth the fee when you have the PRG available for a small increase. Depending on how you will use it of course. I'm surprised that the basic gold is still around. It's mainly benefiting Amex at this point, they payout less to the card holders and still make all the swipe and membership fees.

I agree. It lacks the rewards you can get on the PRG or most prime cards (even cards without an AF). It also lacks the travel benefits you can get on low-rewards cards like the Amex Platinum.

Of course, with the AF waived for the first year, it's not a hugely bad choice. If it is your first Amex card, I would certainly keep it open and make occasional purchases to make it easier to get better Amex cards in the future.

Just build a history with them and try to get a better Amex before the first year expires.

@mdl28: I was looking around the Amex site and I see they offer me 5,000 MR points per referral up to 11 referrals for 55,000 points per year. Is that the standard referral bonus system for all Amex cards? Or would it be higher for Platinum or lower for Green?
Very useful: SchwabPlat, CSP, IHG, Costco (was AA Plat), Freedom, SPG, Prestige (retention)
Somewhat useful: Discover, ED (was EDP), BCE, Hyatt
SD with activity alerts, might close: Arrival

Might add: Proper business card, CSR, Ritz, Delta Gold, First Tech, BofA Travel PH, Aviator Red

Just a thought here, but it might possibly be a good idea to find out if a card is a "decent product" BEFORE you apply for it. Just saying.

Hopefully I'll get one of their no annual fee cards before the year is up. Its mainly to build up with them.

Not sure, but that is the same referral off I had.

I keep mine basically, because I have had AmEx forever and the Roadside Assistance is a big benefit if you were already paying for AAA.

Yeah that's basically why I got the Green. I didn't see much of a benefit in having literally the same charge card but having to pay more in an AF.
