Amex Spree

Postby Darrvao777 » Wed Jul 30, 2014 10:04 am

I'm glad I found this forum. I've had a Marriott card for nearly 5 years now and was never very proactive about looking up all its benefits (and why I was never using them despite paying an annual fee)

Had a quantum surge in income this year thanks to a promotion and I'm even looking into international travel (personal, not business) so bumped my Marriott card up to premier for the 0% international fee (and out of loyalty I guess, they were my 1st card and the only one to extend me a line of credit 5 tears ago)

A buddy then recommended Amex Fidelity for its 2% cash back and what he thought to be better consumer protection. Applied for it and got it in April/May. Decent card but it's fraud protection system and online banking system are both a bit dated. I'm not entirely convinced I'll be keeping this card but will wait until after the big purchase detailed below

And finally, I'm honing in on a big purchase (engagement ring) so decided to apply for a charge card to get the NPSL (it's not as high as I thought it would be but still greater than both my credit lines combined so I guess i cannot complain and can always split the charge amongst multiple cards). Applied for it and got it this week!

Anyway, just wanted to share my story and thank you guys for this forum, it was incredibly helpful when making the decision to pursue the amex Platinum (I guess that would be the first card I actually researched myself and decided to apply for)
- Amex Platinum (primary)
- Citi Double Cash (backup)
- Chase Sapphire Reserve (just to get the bonus, closing in 2017)

Congrats and welcome to the family. While all charge cards claim NPSL, check your spending ability on the amex website before dropping 30k on a ring. Depending on income, they might not approve you for a large transaction. Better to be safe than embarrassed at tiffanys.

Thanks and good call! Looks like the ring will have to be under 30k. "That was all I was approved for honey!"

Wow 30k on a ring? That's about the price range I look for in cars, though granted the Challenger was a little more. What's life like that like anyway? I have no clue. I'm just curious.

Traditionally aren't we supposed to spend 3 months salary on the ring? That's how I was raised. I think the idea of spending 30k on a ring doesn't faze me because I don't get stuck in debt with cars.
When I was younger I used to have a $700 a month car payment. How stupid is that? Along with that payment, the car depreciated so much that when I finally sold it after 4 years, it was worth 1/4 of what I paid for. That's flushing $700 a month down the drain. Key is...keep your old stuff...keep it nice...buy quality that lasts a long time. My 2 cars are older, but paid off and I love them.

$700x48months=33,600.

Life making over 100k a year isn't that different than life at 10k a year. 4 years ago I was making 14k a year, was dumping all my money into that stupid car and its maintenance. If you looked at me then, youd think I was a rich little punk. Look at me now, I ride an electric razor scooter to work. Priorities change but ive stayed the same. I still eat at jack in the box and taco bell. Play COD for 3-4 hours a night and walk mostly everywhere.

Sorry OP for the sidetrack. back on topic.

Nismo lol that LOTR pic.
