I couldn't agree more. I always try and maximize my use of Amex. If a restaurant doesn't take it, I wont go there...simple. They don't take the card, they obviously don't want my business.

I'm sort of new to this idea of travel hacking or maximizing rewards. How big a difference is this in the end?

I've had the same credit card for 5 years now and have started opening up some new ones because I wasn't happy with the old card

My plan now is to almost solely utilize my platinum amex with a Marriott premier as backup in places that don't accept amex

Everyone keeps telling me I'm at a huge rewards disadvantage but when comparing it to a market leader (at least for cash back) like the fidelity amex, it just doesn't seem like a ton to me. I usually spend less than 50k per year on all my cards so we are talking about missing out on $1000. Doesn't seem like a lot if you're already spending 50. Am I undervaluing the $1000 or am I missing another angle here?

- Citi Double Cash
- Amazon Prime Store Card

I have a cell phone credit card case

Amex Blue Cash 5% gas,drug,supermarket
amex spg for non 5% categories
bank of america rewards for anybody who doesn't take amex

A week ago I used 40k spg points to stay at the Dolphin at Disney. After being in a room for a night that had been smoked in they put me in a family suit that should have cost $400 a night we stayed in that room for 4 nights and the cost of the 1st night room should have been $150

$1750 total for 40k in spending If I did that on my amex blue cash in 1% categories I would have $400 to show for my spending, and I know the upgrade was because of the Preferred SPG status due to having the Amex SPG card!!!!

I guess if $1000 is no big deal to you, then you are fine either way. Not everyone is in the financial position be so flippant with that kind of money though.

Your call to make. You could do better than 1% or 2% on certain categories. You'd really have to do the math for yourself (we know nothing about your spend categories and volume) to determine the difference and whether or not it is worth it to you. Worth is always highly subjective.

The OP of this thread, for example, is choosing to forgo maximizing rewards on spend to give business to certain creditors. Others look to seek every possible cent from rewards. Some fall somewhere in between.

My gold card should arrive any day now and I plan to use it for what I can.
