Upgraded PRG to Platinum

Postby MemberSince99 » Wed Jun 18, 2014 8:15 pm

As mentioned I need to travel for work and it seems at least 3 trips this year are in the works so I bit the bullet and upgraded to Platinum since all expenses for the trips will go on this card (I prefer that, as that way I can earn the points).

The 450 is a steep fee to me anyway, but given the upcoming travel it seemed like a no-brainer plus I could always downgrade if a time comes I'm not travelling back to the PRG. So I went to upgrade online and it was accepted I basically just had to click on the upgrade and it was done.

It did kind of scare me that against all conventional wisdom they might hard pull so I checked with Credit Secure but no pull (whew). I didn't think they would, it's not likely but you know just that very tiny chance is kinda scary.....

Did you receive a bonus for upgrading? I notice that every time I login to the AMEX website they want me to upgrade my business Gold to business platinum for 30k MR points. However, when I upgraded my personal PRG to personal platinum that came with no bonus.

No they didn't say anything about a bonus, so my assumption here is I didn't get one. But I wasn't expecting one either.

I was thinking about doing the upgrade myself. AMEX is offereing me 50k points from PRG to Platinum. Are you able to downgrade back to the PRG after 1 year?

Should be able to downgrade anytime. It's only the upgrade that you have to have the card 13 months for.

Just cancel it in a fit of rage. More your style.

That's kind of uncalled for. I can't say I've ever had a fit of rage over a credit card.

Congrats and welcome. For me it takes a few more trips than that to get the full benefit from the card, but if you can justify it in 3, that's awesome.

Thanks. I have 3 that I know of - could be more. But with that is the whole hotels and rental car thing and so on. Plus the luggage insurance is a lot better on Platinum than on PRG, which influenced things as I fly with expensive electronics and the PRG insurance wasn't quite enough for my needs. One claim could pay for the card. It's a no brainer for me to try it out given the travel. If it doesn't suit my long term needs, I'll just downgrade it to PRG.

Don't forget to check out the centurion lounges if you go through an airport that has one. I've been to both, and I enjoy them quite a bit over the admirals club, of which I am also a member.

If I can manage to quit smoking, I may just cancel my admirals club membership. I mostly have it because the admirals clubs in concourse A and D at DFW are the only places behind security at that airport that have a smoking lounge.
