MemberSince99 wrote:As mentioned I need to travel for work and it seems at least 3 trips this year are in the works so I bit the bullet and upgraded to Platinum since all expenses for the trips will go on this card (I prefer that, as that way I can earn the points).

The 450 is a steep fee to me anyway, but given the upcoming travel it seemed like a no-brainer plus I could always downgrade if a time comes I'm not travelling back to the PRG. So I went to upgrade online and it was accepted I basically just had to click on the upgrade and it was done.

It did kind of scare me that against all conventional wisdom they might hard pull so I checked with Credit Secure but no pull (whew). I didn't think they would, it's not likely but you know just that very tiny chance is kinda scary.....

Congratulations! Just curious, have you been checking Amex's site for preapprovals, and if so, did it mention Platinum? I understand it's 13 months to PC. I have a regular gold card and I am wondering if I have to wait 13 to upgrade to PRG myself? When you're eligible, does an upgrade tab suddenly pop up on the site somewhere? I speak for myself and a lot of other people here, thanks for sharing your story and being an inspiration! I personally come back and visit this site mostly to see if you've posted anything new.

Thank you I appreciate the kind words and sentiment!

I had checked but they found no preapprovals for me when I did or special offers or anything like that. Yes I think it's likely you will have to wait. I always had the "Upgrade" option available, but I waited until 13 months to actually use it. So, it's always there, but if it hasn't been 13 months, I don't think it will allow it, or at least that's what I've read.

However I've also read of some people being offered the upgrade by Amex. I wasn't I just clicked upgrade after I knew I should be eligible for it.

I hope this is helpful.

Congrats member and welcome to the club. It's a fun card even though I only carry it when I travel. I used the Concierge for the first time in years last month to score my cousin a table at a hard to get restaurant in the Honda Center. They didn't communicate with me all that well but they came through at the end.

My Plat is up in August. I'm really debating whether or not to keep it. I've had it since 2006 and until this year haven't really balked at paying the AF. I'm traveling less and so far this year I have only made 19 transactions for about $2k. To contrast my BCP has logged 324 transactions for ~$9k and my SPG hasn't seen the light of day all year. I'll stop here.

To be honest my spend is all over the map. I need to focus on one and try to get a spend bonus...

its crazy sounding but they wanted to me get a PRG and i have the platinum so i did some digging and it seems that both would actually do you good and work in tandem as PRG has better rewards for every day use where the platinum is a 1 for 1 and is good for travel perks and deals so i accepted it today the PRG is due to arrive tomorrow as it was sent out next day air i am going to cxl my US BANK CC since i am adding this one to my stable.

Yes that is true, HOWEVER, there is a better combination (possibly) to consider as well - the Amex ED or EDP combined with Platinum. The ED and EDP get you MR points the same as Platinum and PRG, except that EDP while having a lower fee than the PRG gives higher returns on groceries (up to a limit) so it may suit you better that way depending on your spend. Good point about the PRG and the Platinum working together and that's very true, and the ED and EDP can also combine nicely.

Where do you see the "upgrade" option on the website?
I don't see it. I currently have PRG and it's not been 13 months for me.
Anyway is it possible to upgrade before 13 months (have lot of travel coming)?
Thx!

When I went in to look at all Personal Cards, it showed my cards and the button said "Upgrade" instead of "Apply" on it.

Whether they would have approved it early I don't know. It's always YMMV though I know "official" policy is you have to wait 13 months. You can try.

Thanks for the reply!
I still have "apply" and not "upgrade".

13 months before a product change is their interpretation of the CARD act restrictions on 'significant changes' in the first year of the account. They're going to tell you to apply for another card, because changing account types is a significant change.

True, I'm sure you are right the vast majority of the time, it's just I read a few stories on FICO where people claimed to be able to do it early. So I think it's this is the official policy and likely result, but it's always a case of YMMV.
