Quick question about Amex.

Postby OldMan » Mon Jun 16, 2014 5:29 am

I had the wife apply for, and she was instantly approved for the BCE card. (It fits her spending probably better than any other card out there) My question is, we've been monitoring her credit, and I haven't seen an Inquiry hit her report, (been two weeks). Is this normal, do they always HP for new credit cards for new members?
My Wallet:
Discover IT - $4000;
AMEX BCE $12000;
Citi Double Cash - $6600;
CHASE AARP Visa - $5000;
Banana Republic $1200;
NFM - $20,000;
Sears (Citi) MC - $6000;

Did you monitor all bureaus? For my application they pulled Experian, but they could pull other bureaus.
Citi Forward Visa $5000 10/2012 | American Express Blue Cash Everyday $8000 2/2014 | Discover it $7000 5/2014
Chase Freedom Visa Signature $7000 6/2014 | Citi ThankYou Premier Visa Signature $5000 1/2015
All EMV.

I use all of the FAKO sites, CK, Quizzle, Credit.com ect. I've yet to see an inquiry show up yet, was just wondering if they always HP new accounts, or if they sometimes use SP. They used EX for her approval, guess I could purchase a copy of it and find out for sure.

Anecdotally, everything I've read about AMEX indicates they ALWAYS hard pull for new apps for consumers who've never had an AMEX. As stated above, they don't always pull EX, but that's the usual pull. Since you've presumably gotten the letter and card showing that EX was pulled, like you said, just check EX at MyFICO or at the EX site, since apparently the score is not the issue. I wouldn't trust those FAKO sites since they are notoriously slow to update.
Retired, and in the process of retiring cards!
EQ = 846 EX=828 TU = 836 as of 02/2016

Odds are 99.9999% they pulled EX. Credit Sesame is the FAKO (free) site that monitors that. CK won't tell you if you got an inquiry on EX because they monitor TU so it would never see it.

I'd be willing to bet that if you check EX you'll find that's what they pulled.

And by the way an approval is always a hard pull it doesn't matter if you currently have a card or not - if it's approved it's a hard. The vast majority of the time if you are a member and declined they do not hard pull. The other way that you would not get a hard pull is if you are blacklisted by them. But then you wouldn't get approved either.

I just KNOW someone will pipe up out of the woodwork now and say "Well I read a story that a guy on FICO said that he applied for an Amex card and never had one in his life and they approved it and did not hard pull him". All I can say is that's one in a million.

Thanks Member! I'm due to pull her EX report at the end of the month, so I'm betting you're right.
