Physical Quality of the PRG Card

Postby richard24 » Sun Jun 08, 2014 3:21 pm

I just got my Amex PRG card a few months ago, and I'm very happy with the benefits and service thus far. I'm curious as to whether my experiences with the physical quality of the card are idiosyncratic or not. I'm quite surprised to find the black digits already fading, as my cheaper visas would be in better condition with far more use. Curious to see if others have had the same experience.

Same with every Platinum card I've had since I became a member.

Same with mine. I take it as a sign that I use my card. If it really bothers you touch it up with a magic marker - should be easy to do with the raised numbers.

I am very unhappy at how easily the black comes off the card but eh...I use the card so much. I just report the card as being damaged every 6 months or so to keep it fresh.

But then your card number keeps changing! That's a lot of hassle for your automatically charged bills

Only if you tell them you lost the card. If you just say your card is having trouble being read when you swipe it the only thing that changes on the new card is the expiration date.

Hmmm I had a totally 'different' experience. A while back, the magnetic stripe at the back of my cent card was ruined and I asked for it to be replaced. They did it no questions asked BUT the new titanium card came with a completely different number. I never said the card was lost or stolen... just not functioning like you stated.

Incidentally, the plastic cent card that comes as a back-up to my card (not supplemental as that is titanium too) has a completely different number as well.

Bottom line, make sure before you ask for a replacement card... the number change is always a pain to manage through

I've noticed the fading on my PRG, too, after 2 months. I was using it mostly for swiped, in-person transactions and didn't look closely. Today I used it online and the black has largely worn off. I keep it in my wallet under my grocery store's partly transparent discount card (so I can see they're both in there and pull them out together). Maybe the friction accelerates the wear.

My older Chase Freedom Visa is in better condition and has had a lot more total use.

Same here, I recently was issued a new PRG card with chip. It looked great for a few weeks, now its just like my old ones, raised numbers have started to fade away to gold color. Also on my previous PRG cards, I always get this small grey indention/marking under the bottom right end of the mag stripe. Obviously its from swipes, but not sure how and why its only in that spot. I'm waiting to see if it happens to this new card as too.
